about

"In Tempo: Negativ" comes loaded with a tightly crafted selection of dark and deep electronic Crypto-Funk-obscurities - everyone of them carefully mixed, jammed and altogether wrapped up as a fully-fledged dub exploration.
Big Chief's music open-mindedly embraces Electrofunk, Dub and Glitch-aspects of Electronic Music. Furthermore the album is influenced by the sonic escapades of the early Rephlex / Warp / Skam / Sähkö releases - but written with a very personal and original artistic signature. If you deep-listen closely you will also notice traces of Krautrock and a slight taste of musical socialisation from the upmost inventive and avantgardistic era of exact 1980.

You are docking to Stefan Schrom's aka Big Chief Electric´s excellent debut-album on Serve & Destroy recordings, which came out in the auspicious moment of the year 1999. Stefan Schrom originates from Kassel, a small city filled with interdisciplinary artists and homebase of the famous DOCUMENTA. Sensing a perfect timing and some Ozone in the air, Stefan Schrom moved to Cologne in 1998 - exactly when the City started to slowly accumulate megawatts of momentum. Only few years later that energy culminated in what international music mags would then call "The Sound Of Cologne".

REVIEWS:

"The second production on the yet new SERVE & DESTROY-label is not another compilation. It´s the debut-album of one of Cologne's well established electro-artists, Stefan Schrom. His project "Big Chief Electric" is seddled in the gigantic space between pure electronic sound-research and broken beat-metrics. But to simply call this album's genre "Electro" would be unspecific and understated. More important would it be to stress his familiarities with abstract-beat-acts like Autechre & Funkstörung, definetly some of the esthetic coordinates to where you will be brought to. But here I am urgeing you to realise how Big Chief's music differs from the above mentioned by finding out for yourself and follow the album's full storyline - it's DEFINETLY worth it!"
